artist's statement

My work has always been about two things, contrast and people. This is true whether I am portraying an elephant skeleton walking accross a harvested wheat field or a young boy with his arms stretched out accross the women's monument. To me art is expression and expression is inherently emotional. If it was not, it would be science not art.

My images show how I see the world. More often than not this is a reflection on an escape from reality. My art is not about documentation, it is about expressing an interpretation of the world around and inside me. Being a photographer - this process of interpretation and expression starts with light and usually manifests with a much less light.

My inspirations are as contrasting as the way I see the world. I find great inspiration in the works of Artemisia Gentileschi, Diane Victor, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe amd Jan Saudek. In general I am quite taken with the work of Eastern European photographers. There is something old and classical about what they have to say and how they say it.

I often interact quite heavily with my images, adding layers in order to get a specific effect or feel. Art should be more than pure skill and more than pure creativity, it should be an adopted love-child.
